If you’d like to get some background about the importance of drums in Yoruba Religion, scholar Ademọla Adegbite of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, has written a report on this particular topic that can be found here.

It was published in 1988 in the Journal of Religion in Africa. Unfortunately, I haven’t the time to read it at present.
